CAR LOCK REKEY
Car Lock Rekey Service
NorthWest Lock & Key provides mobile automotive lock rekeying throughout Mount Vernon, Burlington, Anacortes, Sedro-Woolley, and surrounding Skagit County communities.

Secure a Recovered Vehicle or Correct Mismatched Locks
Car lock rekeying is commonly needed after a stolen vehicle has been recovered—especially when the thieves still have a working key. It can also correct mismatched locks when a door, ignition cylinder, trunk lock, or other component has been replaced and now requires a different key.
Depending on the vehicle, we may be able to rekey the mechanical locks, repair theft-related damage, remove stolen electronic keys from the vehicle’s system, and program new keys that you control.

Rekeying a Recovered Stolen Vehicle
Getting your stolen vehicle back is a major relief, but it may not be secure if the thieves still have a working key. Whoever has that key might still be able to unlock or start the vehicle.
Simply making another replacement key does not necessarily disable the missing one. Properly securing a recovered vehicle may require addressing two separate systems:
-
Mechanical locks: Rekeying the doors, trunk, tailgate, or ignition so the stolen mechanical key no longer turns them
-
Electronic key system: Removing missing transponder keys, remotes, or smart keys from the vehicle’s memory when supported
The appropriate service depends on the vehicle’s year, make, model, ignition type, and the damage caused during the theft.
Automotive Lock Rekeying After Theft
Rekeying changes the internal combination of a mechanical lock cylinder. Once a lock is rekeyed, the stolen mechanical key should no longer operate that cylinder.
We may be able to rekey or replace:
-
Driver and passenger door locks
-
Ignition lock cylinders
-
Trunk locks
-
Tailgate locks
-
Glove-box locks
-
Other compatible mechanical cylinders
Whenever possible, we can configure the serviced locks to work with the same newly cut key.
Rekeying Mismatched Door and Ignition Locks
Car lock rekeying is also useful when a door lock, ignition cylinder, trunk lock, or entire door has been replaced. Replacement components sometimes come with a different key, leaving the owner with one key for the ignition and another for the door.
When the components are compatible, NorthWest Lock & Key may be able to rekey the replacement lock so it works with the vehicle’s correct mechanical key.
This service may help when:
-
The door and ignition require different keys
-
A replacement door came with its own lock cylinder
-
The ignition cylinder was replaced without being matched to the doors
-
A used door, trunk lid, or tailgate was installed
-
One lock does not match the vehicle’s remaining locks
-
You want to reduce multiple vehicle keys to one matching key
Whenever possible, we will configure the affected locks to operate with the same correctly cut key. Compatibility depends on the vehicle, key type, lock design, and condition of the cylinders.
Remove Stolen Keys From the Vehicle’s System
Many modern vehicles use transponder chips, remote-head keys, proximity keys, or push-to-start smart keys. These electronic keys are authorized through the vehicle’s immobilizer or keyless-entry system.
On supported vehicles, we may be able to:
-
Remove missing keys from the vehicle’s memory
-
Erase unauthorized key fobs or smart keys
-
Program replacement transponder keys
-
Program new remotes or proximity keys
-
Cut new emergency and mechanical keys
-
Verify that the new keys start and operate the vehicle correctly
Electronic key deletion does not automatically change the mechanical locks. Likewise, mechanically rekeying the locks does not automatically remove a stolen electronic key. A recovered vehicle may require both services for more complete security.
Theft-Related Lock and Ignition Repair
Stolen vehicles frequently have damage around the door locks, ignition, steering column, or key system. We can inspect the affected components and determine what can be repaired and what should be replaced.
Common theft-related problems include:
-
Punched or forced door locks
-
Damaged ignition cylinders
-
Broken internal lock wafers
-
Locks damaged with screwdrivers or other tools
-
Missing or destroyed ignition components
-
Doors that no longer lock or unlock correctly
-
Ignitions that turn without the correct key
-
Replacement locks that do not match the vehicle
Available repairs depend on the vehicle and the extent of the damage.
Mechanical Rekeying vs. Electronic Key Programming
Mechanical rekeying and electronic programming serve different purposes.
Mechanical rekeying changes the internal lock combination so an old key can no longer turn the rekeyed cylinder.
Electronic programming authorizes a transponder key or smart key to start the vehicle. It may also allow missing electronic keys to be removed from the vehicle’s memory.
Some vehicles require both services. We can inspect the key system and explain which steps are needed to secure your vehicle properly.
What to Do After Recovering a Stolen Car
After law enforcement releases the vehicle:
-
Confirm that the vehicle may legally be repaired and moved.
-
Determine whether any original or spare keys are missing.
-
Contact your insurance company before authorizing covered repairs.
-
Have the door locks, ignition, and key system inspected.
-
Rekey damaged or compromised mechanical locks.
-
Remove missing electronic keys from the vehicle’s system when supported.
-
Program new keys and verify that they work correctly.
Even if the vehicle appears undamaged, its keys may have been copied or retained during the theft.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will rekeying prevent a stolen key from unlocking my car?
Once a compatible mechanical lock has been properly rekeyed, the old key should no longer turn that cylinder. Any cylinders that are not rekeyed may still work with the old key.
Will rekeying stop the stolen key from starting my vehicle?
Not always. Mechanical rekeying changes the physical lock. Vehicles with transponder or smart keys may also require electronic key deletion and programming.
Can you make my door and ignition work with the same key?
In many cases, yes. If the lock cylinders and key types are compatible, we may be able to rekey a replacement door or ignition cylinder to match the vehicle’s correct mechanical key.
Can you rekey a lock from a replacement car door?
Often, yes. A compatible replacement door lock may be disassembled and rekeyed to work with the vehicle’s existing key.
Can you remove a stolen key fob from my vehicle?
On many vehicles, missing keys can be removed by erasing or resetting the registered-key list and then programming the keys that should remain. Availability varies by year, make, model, and security system.
Can all the locks be made to work with one key?
Whenever the lock designs are compatible, we can configure the serviced mechanical cylinders to work with the same correctly cut key.
Can insurance cover car lock rekeying?
Theft-related lock repair, rekeying, and replacement keys may be covered under comprehensive auto insurance. Coverage and deductibles vary, so contact your insurance provider before authorizing repairs.
What information should I provide when calling?
Please provide the vehicle’s year, make, model, location, and key type. Let us know whether the vehicle was stolen, which keys are missing, which locks do not match, and whether the ignition, doors, steering column, or wiring were damaged.
